My sister bought me this record for my 21st birthday. I played it a few times and thought it was alright. I recently rediscovered it and have been listening to it daily for the past couple of weeks. I'm completely obsessed. Though this album isn't recognized by some as one of the groups best efforts, it still shows that the band was clearly way ahead of their time. Bass player Doug Yule starts the album with "Candy Says," setting the tone for the rest of the record. Enjoy!

Recently my band, Villanelles, had the privilege of playing with these guys at Burlington, Vermont's own Skinny Pancake. They came all the way from Baltimore, MD for a small 10 day tour. Unfortunately, the crowd only comprised of us and a few others, but these guys played a great set from their recent project Vincent.

The following is taken from the bands sister myspace page:

"The Organ Donors Present: Vincent" is like the tempest in which it's set. Somehow simultaneously an intangible and overwhelmingly personal exploration of one character among many in The Brain Trilogy Universe. The Brain is the driving force and storyteller channeling through this new Organ Donors trio.

The Brain first snatched up these adolescent boys from a secondary school in Maryland and called them Human Conduct. Shortly afterwards, it narrowed their agenda and sent them jonglering around as a sort of compartmented circus troupe called The Organ Donors. Now, these boys have grown old and their chops are as right on as their legend. It's a rusty array of instruments and an even rustier array of musicians playing music keenly prepped by some otherworldly object.

So back to the task at hand; Vincent is an exploration of one haunted detective perished in a gutter somewhere in Russia after avenging the death of his wife and children. His reflections on poor decisions, his longing for the way things once were. There might be no conflict, no resolution, no peak or valley, but there might be something in this for everyone. Listen up.

...We left our hero(?), Vincent, dead on the outskirts of a Russian market, where he had convinced himself that his sense of nihilistic futility was Truth. As a vague nothingness swallowed his body (his prison cell), Vincent moaned and believed he was at the end.

The Brain looks on and laughs.

True, his tenure in turmoil had come to a halt, but this brief visit to the Existential Vacuum was simply another "phase" of his spiritual existence, not an extended stay. So his itch exasperated and the drama unfolded, yet the curtain closed and the story broke apart like burnt food scraps jetted off the sides of a pot by a flush of cold water. Our man(?) Vincent is left looking at himself from every angle, inside and outside. The only illusion left is light.

His body's dead and this does not signify the end. He stands on the edge of a body of water next to an unkempt canoe. A glowing sphere is off in the distance. It is neither the Sun nor a lighthouse beam. It is embryonic, perfectly round, warm, soft, and unidentifiable. He drags the canoe into the water, gets in, rows off. The music has never stopped playing..."

We had a great time playing with these guys and the music is definitely worth a listen. Enjoy!

These guys are fucking terrific. They are currently on tour with Tapes n' Tapes, which is where I had the pleasure of catching them. Definitely a band to see live, though this nice little 11 track CD-R that they have on tour with them is a great glimpse of their forthcoming untitled debut album. San Francisco has never had a hard time providing an amazing atmosphere for a lifestyle unlike most throughout the rest of the country. In the late 60's the Bay area helped bands produce a signature pop sound that is still prominent in bands in the area today. Lately I have found myself listening to a variety of bands hailing from the great American West Coast, many of these from San Francisco. Recently I had the pleasure of seeing Baltimore dream-pop all-stars Beach House, with their perfectly fit opener Papercuts. Having never heard anything by Papercuts previously, I was overjoyed to find them exactly what I needed; perfectly constructed pop anthems with the ability to take the listener almost into the warm water of the Pacific and beyond. The following posts are just a few of the great bands hailing from the Bay area, all worth a listen.

When Jason Schwartzman isn't working with Wes Andersen, or playing drums for Phantom Planet, he is writing some of the catchiest songs around under the cameo Coconut Records. This album is really well done , with catchy melancholy lyrics that manage to stick themselves in ones head all day. My personal favorite is the last track on the album, "West Coast," as Schwartzman pleads to some lover that he wishes he could take her with him in his suitcase, but alas, he cannot and must be on his way.

Bradford Cox presents his solo experiment while his band, Deerhunter, from Atlanta GA, take a little break. This album holds a mesh of sounds and vocals that sound very much like some of the early 90s shoegazer I have loved for years. Despite the similarity, this is fresh and deserves multiple listens, if you can push yourself past the ambiance.

I met this wonderful group of people when I opened for them at the Radio Bean in Burlington, VT in November of 2006. Hailing from Olympia, WA, they were so charming and pleasant and really put on a good show. This is their first full-length release, which I promptly bought as soon as their quaint little set was finished. Really a great album.

I love this album. I hadn't heard it until January of 2007, but it threw me for loop immediately. Dan Boeckner's voice echoes through the night while Spencer Krug's heavy keyboards and driving drums back him up perfectly. The song "Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts," has some of the best lyrics on the album:

"Well I've got a hand
So I've got a fist
So I've got a plan
It's the best that I can do
Now we say 'It's in god's hands'
But god doesn't always have the best god damn plans does he?"

Currently, the band is mixed with various other musical projects, most of which involve Boeckner's voice backed up by similar musician ship. Some of these other projects include Swan Lake, Sunset Rubdown, and Handsome Furs. Wolf Parade are currently finishing up their sophomore album, and have been playing songs off of it for some time now. It is expected to be finished sometime in the Spring of '08.

Black Lips are a rowdy alt-punk band from Atlanta, Georgia. After listening to this album for the first time, I couldn't help but notice a early Velvet Underground influence, full of the froth that hovered over NYC in the late 60's. These guys are known for their energy during their live shows, which include vomit, urination, nudity, band members kissing, and various other things.

The energy on this album is almost just as fresh as their celebrated live performance. The song "O, Katrina," asks the violent storm "why you gotta be so mean?" and sets up the rest of the album nicely. Grab a scotch and a fat one and listen to this album with an open mindset, because you will no undoubtedly be ready to go after the first listen.

A classic that should need no introduction, this album remains one of my favorites. There is only one word that can really describe this album for me...and that word is "guitars." I included the version with "Little Johnny Jewel," the band's first single, which initially started their upward spiral into New York City's post-rock/punk explosion of the early 1970s. In 1973, the band started a long-term residency at New York's very own CBGB, where the band brought "street music," as punk rock was once called, to the masses. Thus, the punk rock music scene was born.

Seabear is the brainchild of 23-year-old Sindri Sigfœsson from Reykjavik, Iceland. Originally starting as a one man project, Seabear writes songs with a beautiful blend of acoustic guitars, quiet breathy vocals, synthesizers and perfectly withheld percussion. If it wasn't for Sindri being asked by the Books to open for them in Berlin, the project might still be a one man mission. Now, the group has expanded, and have created a wonderfully crafted piece of music using the above combination.

Tacks, the Boy Disaster, is an Austin, Texas based foursome with a plan. Their track "Man with a Plan," off their EP Oh, Beatrice, says it all. The song starts with a lonesome piano followed by a perfect combination of bass, drums, and guitar. Evan Porter, also of The Polyphonic Spree, sings sweetly to a woman named Beatrice, as he confesses that despite the cool he keeps, he still has "too much on his plate" around a table set for two.

I came across this album only recently and have been quite hooked since. I'm reminded of the of the beauty that Grizzly Bear graced my ears with upon their release of Yellow House a year ago. Very piano driven, this EP presents and beautifully tranquil sound, full of bells, whistles and perfectly constructed compositions which creates catchy melodic folk pop at its finest.

First (and best in my opinion) album from yet another great New York City ensemble, Turn On The Bright Lights is dark and tragic and beautiful in its own indie/post-rock sort of way. Paul Banks' vocals resemble the quivery solitude that the late Ian Curtis of Joy Division once held, while the rest of the band backs him up tremendously.

The first album in the brilliant trilogy also including Rain Dogs and Franks Wild Years, Swordfishtrombones is an instant classic. The rasp in Mr. Waits' voice has been described as a cup of razor blades followed by a bottle of scotch and a pack of cigarettes. Not to mention the sheer tragedy that flows within him as he belts into the microphone. Like a lonely cat in a November night, I picture him shuffling his feet with his collar up past an old lamp post just about to burn out. Rain and soot and alchohol soak the streets behind him as he walks aimlessly through the night and into the dreams of anyone not careful enough to lock their windows before they drift off to sleep.

Celebration - The Modern Tribe (2007)

The second release from this Baltimore trio, The Modern Tribe is a mesh of swirling organ, wailing vocals, and thunderous percussion, all mixed together in order to establish some sort of authority. The first track "Evergreen," is one of the best songs I have heard in a while, and the rest of the album creates a sense of comfort that envelopes you as you delve through the 11 tracks.

This album is really a breath of fresh air. Mixing electronic backdrop with heavy percussion and distortion, +/- really have a lot to offer. Songs range from quite and pleasant, forcing the listener into a dream scape full of questions and puzzles, to songs full of heavy noise/psychedelia, propelling one into a whirlpool of heavy machinery, dirt, and smoke. Plenty of samples make for a big sound, filling plenty of space. Later in the album, a specific statement rings true, almost summing up the entire album.

"Don't fall in love with anyone too soon."

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin- Broom (2005)

Though their name is a bit extreme and even over the top, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin present simple indie-pop pleasures on their debut album "Broom." Full of subtle emphasis on what makes good song writing, these men, and they aren't boys anymore seeing how they are almost out of their early 20s, really have a great and confident sound. The real catch with this band, besides the fantastic instrumentation, are the lyrics. The first track on the album, entitled "Pangea," is brilliant. "Pangea, we used to be together, why'd we have to drift apart?" Songs like "House Fire," present a bit darker side of separation. "We did what we could to save this car from crashing. You're pretty face is soaked in blood, but you know I still find you dashing." Really quite lovely stuff. Their new album is due out soon, (so I've heard,) and if anything it will be a brilliant extension to this fantastic debut.

As summer has come to a close and all thoughts of beaches disappear into the backs of our minds for another winter, Beach House remains. This debut album is nothing short of heartbreaking and beautiful. It's simple really. Summer songs have a specific structure that make their listener feel. The beauty is that it doesn't actually have to be summer in order to feel this album. Victoria Legrand supplies the almost ghoulish vocals/organ, while Alex Scally adds the subtle guitar that makes you feel as though you are driving down a dead end street that is your only way home. The fact of the matter is that these two really have something here. I recently saw Beach House opening for Grizzly Bear. They were just as majestic live and Victoria's notes were enough to give me chills. After the show, I spoke with Alex and he told me to look for a new album out within the next few months.

The question you have to ask yourself is whether these songs make you feel like you're walking the beach eternally as a crying apparition, longing for your lost lover, or put you with the sand between your toes sipping a nice cold Corona. This album is perfectly capable of both.

The Shaky Hands are easily one of the freshest sounding bands of the year. With an indie/folk apparatus changing from acoustic to electric throughout the album, these guys really have a great sound worth checking out. The songs "Why/How Come?" and "I'm Alive" are my personal favorites, but the album as a whole is truly well written and a real "grower." Definitely deserves multiple listens and by then, you will be hooked.

Animal Collective Live @ Webster Hall 10/1/07

Animal Collective's short residency (2 days) at New York City's Webster Hall was nothing short of amazing. Though Avey had a hard time the first night, Monday's 10/1/07 performance made up for any disappointment the night before. Playing mostly new material unreleased, as well as stuff from their latest release, Strawberry Jam, and their earlier album Sung Tongs, this performance was not to be missed. Thanks to nyctaper for the incredible sounding recording of this fantastic show!
